SAN MARCOS,
Texas – Texas State students participated in brief interviews on campus on
Monday, April 1st, 2019, to help raise awareness of how one can
personally prevent sexual assault.
Freshman
Sara Cain and juniors Josue Vanco and Zoe Zalenski responded in various ways as
a means to define sexual assault and what could be done to prevent the act from
even taking place.
“I would
define sexual assault as any sexual act that takes place despite someone not
consenting,” said Zalenski.
Cain
believes you need to be smart with what you do and the people you surround
yourself with.
“If you’re
out partying and not with people you truly trust, don’t consume that much
alcohol or just be very aware of your surroundings,” said Cain.
Although it
is important to keep yourself out of harm’s way, it is essential to make sure
your piers are on a safe path as well.
“Don’t leave
your friends alone when they’re intoxicated and dancing with some random guy,”
Zalenski said. “Stand up for yourself and for those around you.”
Awareness is
key to insure that everyone will stay out of a dangerous situation. If you have
friends who are in a questionable state and potentially putting themselves in
peril, it is vital to remove them from the situation.
“Stop being
a bystander and just take action,” said Vanco.
There is
always strength in numbers. Never put yourself in uncomfortable environments,
especially without a group of people that are able to watch out for one
another. When it comes to sexual relations with another individual, consent
should always be obtained, without question.
If you or
anybody you know has been sexually assaulted, Texas State provides several
resources ranging from sexual assault examinations to counseling, or even
contact information to report cases.
