Stay safe at Texas State University

By Samantha Kaiser

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University students were interviewed on campus on Tuesday, April 2 to get information on sexual assault.

Zoe Zalenski, Texas State University junior, describes what sexual assault means to her.

"I would define sexual assault as any sexual act that takes place despite someone not consenting,” said Zalenski.

Zalenski said that intimacy should be clearly established between both partners.

Madeline Wiley, Texas State University junior, talked about the ways she stays safe while on campus.

"I can protect myself by hanging out in friendly groups that I am comfortable with being alone with,” said Wiley. “I will always have a buddy walk me home or be on the phone with my friends as I am walking home safely.”

Wiley says another thing she does is check her surroundings wherever she goes.

Thomas McBryde, chief innovative officer at The Evolve Firm in San Antonio, discussed how you can prevent sexual assault.

“Educate people about it from a young age,” said McBryde.

McBryde also says that we should help the victims feel comfortable when reporting incidents.

If you or someone you know is dealing with sexual assault, or if you have any questions please contact the University Police Department at 512-245-2890.
