Texas State University Students Discuss Sexual Assault
on Campus
By: Jameson Dunn
SAN MARCOS, Texas- Students at Texas State University were interviewed
about sexual assault on Monday, April 1st in order to gain further insight
on how the university can prevent this issue.
Sara Cain, a 19-year-old Texas State University freshman,
defines sexual assault as “Someone taking advantage of someone else when that
person doesn’t want to be taken advantage of,” said Cain.
She went on to describe an instance where someone she knew
was sexually assaulted.
“I had a friend and she went to this party. She got pretty
drunk and everything. There was a guy there who she’d been friends with for a
while. He said that you can sleep in his bed. She said that he came into the
room when she was sleeping and tried cuddling with her and everything and she
wasn’t having it. So, she ended up calling an Uber, but she was just not
friends with him anymore and was not okay with that.”
Other students such as Justin Evans, a 19-year-old nursing major,
does not think sexual assault is easily defined.
“But it’s like in the moment it can at times be not perceived
as such. Of course, in certain situations it is assault, but our generation may
not brand it as that,” Said Evans.
Many students think that the university could be doing more
to prevent sexual assault among students.
"[Campus security] are around gyms and stuff not even
paying attention to what is going on," said Tiara Spear, a 20-year-old International
Business/Performance double major. "They should be focusing more on dorms.
If somebody is coming in from something terrible or if somebody is coming in
kind of violent, they should checkup," Spear said.
