Sara Cain

19, Undeclared

How do you define sexual assault?

“Someone taking advantage of someone else when that person doesn’t want to be taken advantage of,” said Cain.

Have you previously experienced or witnessed sexual assault? If so, explain?

“Yes,” said Cain. “I had a friend and she went to this party. She got pretty drunk and everything. There was a guy there who she’d been friends with for a while. He said that you can sleep in his bed (was at his house). She said that he came into the room when she was sleeping and tried cuddling with her and everything and she wasn’t having it. So she ended up calling an Uber, but she was just not friends with him anymore and was not okay with that.”

What can you do, personally, to prevent sexual assault?

“I think you just need to be smart with what you do and who you hang out with. Like, if you’re out partying and not with people you truly trust, don’t consume that much alcohol or just be very aware of your surroundings,” said Cain.

What should Texas State University do to discourage/condemn sexual assault, and how can they better help the victim(s) on campus?

“I really liked the tea video that they showed everyone at the beginning of the year. I think they only showed that to us once and they kind of don’t acknowledge a lot of the sexual assault that does go on the campus, so maybe they should kind of enforce it more,” Cain said.

“Sexual assault I think is unsolicited physical contact and/or other things that the victim has not consented to,” Vanco said.

Have you previously experienced or witnessed sexual assault? If so, explain?

“I have not experienced it myself, but I have a couple of friends that have experienced it,” Vanco said. “But it is confidential.”

What can you do, personally, to prevent sexual assault?

“I think one big part is communication. Being able to just be there for the person and stop being a bystander and just take action.

“I think that one thing that they could do is maybe have open sessions to like, students in general, other than just employees for the institution,” said Vanco.

Justin Evans

How do you define sexual assault?

“Physical uncomfortableness or physically touching another gender in an uncomfortable way,” said Evans.

Have you previously experienced or witnessed sexual assault? If so, explain?

“Definitely. But it’s like in the moment it can at times be not perceived as such. Of course, in certain situations it is assault, but our generation may not brand it as that,” Evans said.

What can you do, personally, to prevent sexual assault?

“You spread the word and you talk about it more,” said Evans.
