Student reporters interview about sexual assault

By Arian Helm and Frank Arredondo

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University student reporters interviewed students and staff, to define sexual assault, share experiences and discuss improvements on student’s safety at Texas State University on Tuesday, April 2.

Mary Pavia, a Texas State University staff member, discusses respecting others when asked to define sexual assault.

“I define sexual assault as someone who has the hatred that doesn’t care about the feelings of someone else,” said Mary Pavia.

Meanwhile, Political Science major, Kenua Webster, defines sexual assault as another person taking advantage of or overpowering another individual.

Kenua Webster said when someone forces or coerce someone else into performing sexual acts making them do things that they don't want to do. It doesn't have to be sometimes sexual and sometimes it could be just power.

Texas State University has had sexual assault encounters in the past few years, and Jordon Miller, a male student, offers a solution on how to reduce sexual misconduct.

“They should continue to inform students on what is correct or incorrect in regard to sexual interactions and continue to punish those who commit such acts,” said Miller.

Justin Evans, 19, reflects on experiencing and witnessing a sexual assault.

“Definitely. But it’s like at the moment it can at times be not perceived as such. Of course, in certain situations it is assault, but our generation may not brand it like that,” said Evan.
